It is called the 949, an unusual name and a number that is easy to remember, but a weight difficult to achieve; 949 is actually the target weight of the new Olympia XC frame, for a bike that has to weigh less than 8 kg in its super-top configuration. The 949 is 100% Italian made, a monocoque produced in a single mould with no joints using the “vacuum bag” technique.The “vacuum bag” process guarantees a structure that is super-compact in all sections and withstands stresses better. The frame is lighter (less air, less impregnating agent, meaning less weight). Remember that the resin matrix does not provide mechanical strength: it simply binds the fibres together within and between layers. From the point of view of material, the new 949 uses three different types of carbon fibre, strategically positioned to suit the various sections of the frame. UD M30 fabric for longitudinal stiffness, T700 multiaxial fabric for better torsional rigidity and Kevlar/Carbon twill for better absorption of vibrations.
